WindUp for Windsurfers
Race-board, slalom, freestyle, wave — set the threshold for your sail size and WindUp tells you exactly when to rig.
Set it once — WindUp rings the second windsurfing wind hits, even on Silent.
What WindUp does for windsurfers.
- Per-sail thresholds — 7.5 freeride vs 5.0 wave board with one tap
- Get woken even on silent the moment your spot is on
- Trust live stations, not 6-hour-old forecast cells
WindUp is a free live wind alarm — set your windsurfing wind window once and it watches your spot for you, even on Do Not Disturb or Silent.
What wind speed do you need for windsurfing?
Windsurfing covers a huge wind range because the kit does. With a big freeride sail you can get planing from the mid-teens; on a small wave sail you will happily hold on past 30 knots. That is why the useful band runs roughly 15-35 knots - which sail you rig decides where in that band you want the alarm to fire.
Gusts, not just averages
For windsurfers gusts mean power, then overpower. A gust well above your sail's range means catapults and spin-outs, so it is worth knowing the peak, not just the average, before you rig down.
How to set your windsurfing alarm
Set WindUp to the range for the sail you want to ride - say a 7.5 m around 15-20 kt or a 5.0 m around 25-32 kt. Save a threshold per sail and flip between them, and add a gust ceiling so you rig the right size first time.
The windsurfing edge.
Sail size in one line: comfortable sail area ≈ weight in kg ÷ average knots × 2.2, so 80 kg in 20 kt sits near a 6.4. The spread between lull and gust matters more than the average for early planing — 18 kt steady planes a bigger board than 22 kt that breathes between 14 and 28. Set your alarm minimum at your planing threshold, not your survival threshold.
