Why sailing

What WindUp does for sailors.

  • Check station observations before leaving the dock
  • Choose conditions for your boat and planned session
  • Compare the current wind with your marine forecast

WindUp is a free live wind alarm — monitor a supported station for your chosen conditions. On iOS, allow Critical Alerts to sound through Silent or Focus. Delivery depends on your device and connection.

How much wind

What wind speed do you need for sailing?

The useful wind range depends on the boat, sail plan, crew and water conditions. The 8–20 kt example shown here is an alarm-window illustration, not a recommendation for every boat. Use your boat’s guidance and local forecast to plan.

Gusts, not just averages

Review gusts alongside the average, sea state and forecast trend. Reefing decisions depend on the boat and crew; a station alert cannot decide the sail plan for you.

How to set your sailing alarm

Choose a supported station with useful exposure for your spot. Set conditions based on your equipment, experience and local guidance. Check the timestamp and conditions on arrival; a matching station reading is not a safety assessment.

Local knowledge

Reading the wind for sailing

A shore station measures wind at its sensor. Your boat’s apparent wind also depends on boat speed and heading. Check how exposed the station is before comparing it with conditions on open water.

Questions

Sailing wind, answered.

What wind is too much for sailing?
There is no universal maximum. The boat, sail plan, crew, sea state and forecast trend determine the decision. Follow your boat’s guidance and local advice.
Can WindUp alert me only when my home club is sailable?
WindUp can monitor a supported nearby station against your chosen conditions. You still need to check the water, forecast and local conditions.
Best wind speed for sailing?
Choose a wind range for your boat and crew. A number suitable for one dinghy or keelboat may be unsuitable for another.
