WindUp for Paragliders
Paragliding is unforgiving on gusts. WindUp watches your launch site for steady wind under your gust ceiling and pings the moment it's flyable.
Set it once — WindUp rings the second paragliding wind hits, even on Silent.
What WindUp does for paraglider pilots.
- Hard gust ceiling (e.g. ‹20 kt) — alarm cancels if station spikes above it
- Direction-aware: only alarm when wind is matching the launch face
- Friend-mode: share alerts with your launch crew
WindUp is a free live wind alarm — set your paragliding wind window once and it watches your spot for you, even on Do Not Disturb or Silent.
What wind speed do you need for paragliding?
Paragliding is the one sport here where less wind is safer. A wing flies best in light, smooth air - roughly 5-15 knots for most pilots - because the glider needs to move through the air, not get pinned by it. Above that, launching and landing get dangerous fast, which is why the upper limit is a hard safety line, not a preference.
Gusts, not just averages
Gusts are the real hazard. A 12-knot average that gusts to 22 can collapse a wing or drag a pilot on launch, so most pilots want gusts within about 5 knots of the average and treat a punchy day as a no-fly day.
How to set your paragliding alarm
Set WindUp conservatively - a 5-15 kt window with a hard gust ceiling a few knots above your comfort - and use the direction filter so you are only alerted when the wind matches your launch face. The goal is to be told when it is safe, not just when it is windy.
The paragliding edge.
Two habits keep pilots out of trouble: compare the gust to the average (more than ~5 kt over is a no-fly signal at most sites), and watch the trend across the last hour, not one reading — building thermal cycles show up as a rising sawtooth before they show up as a scary gust. WindUp's gust ceiling automates the first; the hourly glance is on you.
