WindUp for Drone & RC Pilots

DJI Mini 4 Pro caps at 12 m/s. Mavic 3 at 12 m/s. RC fixed-wings care about gusts, not just average. WindUp tells you exactly when it's safe.

Why drones & rc pilots

What WindUp does for drone & RC pilots.

  • Per-aircraft thresholds — Mini 3, Mini 4 Pro, Mavic 3, Air 3, custom
  • Convert m/s ↔ kt ↔ mph ↔ km/h, no math
  • Land-now alerts when gust exceeds your safety margin

WindUp is a free live wind alarm — set your drones & rc pilots wind window once and it watches your spot for you, even on Do Not Disturb or Silent.

Wind limits by aircraft

ModelMax wind resistance
DJI Mini 310.7 m/s (~21 kt)
DJI Mini 4 Pro10.7 m/s (~21 kt)
DJI Air 312 m/s (~23 kt)
DJI Mavic 312 m/s (~23 kt)
How much wind

What wind speed do you need for drones & rc pilots?

Drones do not have a minimum - calm is fine - they have a ceiling. Each aircraft has a published wind-resistance limit (a DJI Mini 4 Pro is rated to about 10.7 m/s, an Air 3 or Mavic 3 to 12 m/s), and the smart move is to stay comfortably under it. Past the limit the drone burns battery fighting wind, drifts, and may not make it home.

Gusts, not just averages

Wind at altitude is stronger and gustier than at ground level, so a calm launch can still mean a fight at 100 metres. A sudden gust above your aircraft spec is the moment to land, which is why the peak matters more than the average for pilots.

How to set your drones & rc pilots alarm

Set WindUp maximum to a margin below your aircraft rated limit - say 8 m/s for a Mini, 10 m/s for a Mavic - and turn on the land-now gust alert. WindUp converts m/s, knots, mph and km/h so you can match the number to your drone spec sheet.

Local knowledge

The drones & rc pilots edge.

Wind at 100 m altitude typically runs 1.5–2× the ground-station reading — the number on your screen is the calm version of what your drone is fighting. Budget battery accordingly: fly upwind first, land by 50% in any real breeze, and treat a gust spread wider than 8 kt as the signal to bring it home early.

Where to ride

Popular drones & rc pilots spots.

SpotWhat to expect
Coastal cliffs and headlandsGreat footage, but onshore wind accelerates over the edge - watch the gusts.
Open farmland and fieldsFew obstacles, but nothing to shelter you if it picks up.
Mountains and valleysFunnelled, unpredictable wind - fly early before thermals build.
Urban rooftopsTurbulent, swirling wind between buildings even on a calm day.
Questions

Drones & RC Pilots wind, answered.

Is it safe to fly a drone in this wind?
As a rule, keep sustained wind comfortably below your aircraft's rated limit - about 10.7 m/s for a DJI Mini, 12 m/s for a Mavic or Air 3 - and watch the gusts. WindUp alerts you when it is within your set margin and warns when a gust exceeds it.
Why is wind worse higher up for drones?
Wind speeds up and gets gustier with altitude, so a calm launch can become a battle at 100 metres. WindUp's land-now gust alert helps you bring it home before that happens.
What's the wind limit for my DJI drone?
Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro: 10.7 m/s (~21 kt). Air 3 and Mavic 3: 12 m/s (~23 kt). WindUp converts units automatically and only alerts you when conditions are within your aircraft's spec.
