What wind speed do you need for kitesurfing?
Kitesurfing needs enough wind to pull you across the water, but not so much that you are overpowered. Most riders are happiest in 15-25 knots: light enough to stay in control, strong enough to get up and ride and even boost a jump. Your ideal range shifts with your weight, board and kite size.
Gusts, not just averages
Gusts matter as much as the average. A spot reading 18 knots that spikes to 30 is harder and riskier to ride than a steady 22, so set a gust ceiling and a spiky, squally day will not drag you to the beach for nothing.
How to set your kitesurfing alarm
In WindUp, set your minimum near 15 kt and your maximum near 25 kt, add a gust ceiling a few knots above your max, and switch on a direction filter so you are only alerted when the wind is side-on or on-shore at your beach.

Quick kite-size math: your all-round kite in square metres is roughly your weight in kg divided by the average wind in knots, times 2.2 — a 75 kg rider in 18 kt lands near a 9 m. If you own two kites, split your range so their windows overlap by 2–3 kt instead of meeting at one number; the overlap is where you'll actually ride most days.
